Guide to e-Government Services
Do you know that there are more than 1,600 Government services available online? How do you navigate the complexities of the Internet and know which portal to go to for what services? There is, thankfully, just one portal whereby you can access services and information related to the Government of Singapore.
Launched in 1999, the eCitizen Portal is an initiative owned by the Ministry of Finance and managed by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA). The eCitizen Portal allows you to:
- Search for and access a diversity of information from government agencies.
- Carry out transactions online with government agencies.
The various e-Government services are grouped into seven broad categories. Accessing these services is easy. All you need is your SingPass. If you are a Singapore citizen or permanent resident, a valid employment, dependent or S-pass holder and do not already have one, you can easily register for it online at SingPass’ website (www.singpass.gov.sg). Work permit holders should check with the Ministry of Manpower to see if they are eligible for a SingPass.
Culture, Recreation & Sports
Here you can take part in virtual heritage trails, check out events and festivals year-round, find out about the local flora and fauna in parks and book sports facilities over the Internet.
Defence & Security You can apply for your passport and re-register your NRIC online, and make reports on fire hazards and non-emergency police reports. NSmen will be able to access a wide range of e-services including registering for National Service and booking IPPT test dates.
Education, Learning & Employment Parents will find the education resources useful, including getting the list of approved textbooks for schools and finding out more about schools in Singapore. Job seekers and employers will want to check out the online job-matching database while employers can enjoy the instant verification service for foreign worker work pass.
Family & Community Development The directory of family and social services provides a wealth of information on family support services like childcare and infant care, after-school care for students as well as care for the elderly. Singles can use online matchmaking services while couples can file their notice of marriage online. You can even make donations online, or find out more about the unique needs of the disabled.
Health & Environment
In this portal, you can make an appointment with your doctor, buy medicine and health supplements, find out more about Eldercare health services, get weather predictions, and learn more about protecting our environment.
Housing Everything you need for HDB housing is available online, including checking on latest transacted prices of HDB resale units and private housing, and understanding the different modes of sale for new HDB flats like Walk-In-Selection Exercise, Build-To-Order System and Balloting Exercise. You can also get the latest information on housing financial schemes and CPF financing rules, information on renting HDB flats, guidelines on home renovations, and estate renewal programmes.
Transport & Travel
All the information you need about motoring is here, including tips on learning to drive and owning a car in Singapore, information on road tax renewal, COE rules, and ERP rates. If you are travelling abroad, you can also check on flight schedules and visa requirements. So whether you are filing your taxes, checking the availability of new HDB flats, registering for National Service or applying for a new passport, you can do all this and much more at eCitizen. By accessing e-Government services instead of physically going down to the various government agencies, you are saving time and adding convenience to your life.
