Ready to take better snapshots on your next family holidays?
Here’s how you can capture amazing images of those special
family moments with ‘prosumer’ cameras.
"Prosumer" is a word often used to describe cameras that
are for those on the border line between being consumers and
professional users. The Canon EOS 10D/ 300D digital SLR cameras are
a few examples and these cameras are priced for consumers or
hobbyists and can also be used professionally due to their high
quality output, range of features and expandability.

Tip 1: Capturing Architectural Marvels.
To capture stunning images of architectural buildings, try
photographing buildings in the evening. Twilight allows you to
capture the colours of the building more vividly. To capture an
image such as this (see image ‘Mosque in the evening’),
Set your camera on ‘P’ mode and don’t forget to
set your white balance to ‘daylight’. This is useful on
family trips to famous landmarks.
Tip 2: Back to the Old School.
It may be obvious but trying out different modes on your cameras
can help you to bring out and convey different emotions and moods
in a photo. One mode to try out would be to create nostalgic or
‘retro’ photos. To create an interesting, nostalgic
photo (see image ‘Nostalgic’), select the
‘Nostalgic’ mode on your camera. For cameras without
such modes, you can use the ‘Black & White’ mode
and tweak the setting to a high contrast and ISO setting to get a
‘creamier’ effect to your photo.
Tip 3: Going for an IMPACT!
To produce images that make an IMPACT – play with greater
contrasts and colours, use the ‘vivid colour’ or
‘positive film’ mode. These modes will allow you to
capture an image such as this (see image ‘impact’)
which showcases beautiful colours and contrasts.
Tip 4: Creating Depth
In order to tell a story with an image, photographers tend to rely
on creating a perception of ‘depth’ in an image. Use
the AV (Aperture Priority) mode found on your camera. This enables
you to control the aperture and to create the concept of
‘depth’ in a photo. To achieve a shot like this (see
image ‘depth’) a ‘F8’ was selected. This
method can be used when you want to focus especially on the facial
expressions of your family members.
Tip 5: Capturing the Night
To capture images at night, one good tip to follow is to use a high
ISO. This allows you to obtain sharp and clear images at night (see
image ‘Night Shot’).
Conclusion:
Becoming a good photographer takes time. It is good to take the
time and explore the different settings and modes that are
available on your digital camera. However, photography requires the
photographer to pay attention to details and the surrounding. Good
composition also makes a great difference. By using the environment
and your surroundings, you can capture images such as this (see
image ‘Reflections’) where the reflection of the water
was used to capture the lighted Christmas tree.
